Engines and Performance
Across trim levels and packages, the new Explorer offers versatile performance for a range of driving needs.
There's no wrong choice when it comes to picking an engine for your new Explorer. The standard unit is a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6. Its 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque are plenty enough for driving conditions of all types. The available 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder goes down in size but ip in torque, moving up to 310 pound-feet. At the top of the range is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. Coming standard on the Sport and Platinum trims, it produces 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.Â
Every new Explorer, regardless of engine, comes with a sturdy six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. If you're looking for more control over gears, consider the Sport or Platinum trims with available paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
If you aim to take your Explorer off road, opting for the available intelligent four-wheel drive system may be preferable. Intelligent four-wheel drive comes with a Terrain Management System that has four drive settings for different conditions like mud, gravel, snow, and more.Â
With the right options, your new Explorer could be ready for towing as well. The Class III Trailer Tow Package outfits the Explorer with an engine oil cooler, trailer hitch, and wiring harness. Additionally, the available trailer sway control feature counteracts trailer sway with engine and braking adjustments. The Class III Trailer Tow package is available for the 3.5-liter Ti-VCT engine and standard with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost.
Interior Features and Capacity
Whether you're looking for an effective family hauler, a premium driving experience, or an adventure-ready SUV, the new Explorer has an interior to suit your expectations.
Let's start with the basics. One of the Explorer's most popular attributes is the sheer space within its cabin -- It can seat up to seven passengers comfortably. Split-folding second and third-row seating means the space is flexible, as well. There's 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Cargo capacity expands to 43.8 cubic feet with the third row folded down. Finally, the Explorer offers up to 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space with all of the rear seats folded down. An available foot-activated power liftgate makes accessing that cargo space easy, even with your hands full.
You won't have to suffer through Spartan conditions to take advantage of the Explorer's practicality. Optional features like stitched leather upholstery, wood trim pieces, heated seats, and a twin-panel moon roof create a pleasant and comfortable space within the new Explorer.
Ford Explorer Trim Levels
Each driver has their own preferences for features, performance, and more. To accommodate these varying perspectives, Ford offers the new Explorer with a variety of trim levels. Each trim has a list of standard and available features that separate it from the rest.
